This program builds fundamental technical skills by integrating classroom instruction with real-life applications Typical Program Topics Basic electrical theory Reading and drawing electrical schematic diagrams Reading blueprints Fundamentals of AC and DC circuits Theory and operation of electric motors Single- and three-phase power distribution Residential and commercial circuit design Wiring in new construction Rewiring in older construction Troubleshooting, testing and repair Low voltage control systems BOCA, National Electrical Code and over current protection Safety and accident prevention in the shop and on the job site Estimating Objectives Students study and learn to apply the basic theories and concepts of electricity and magnetism, which explain the operation of various electrical systems, through practical shop activities. Students learn to lay out, assemble and install various circuits and electrical equipment used in residential, commercial and industrial settings. These activities are accomplished by devoting approximately 70 percent of time to shop work for hands-on learning and 30 percent to related theory. Small jobs are also completed throughout the school for actual first-hand knowledge of the trade. A graduate of the Electrical Occupations program should be able to: Demonstrate technical skills that meet quality work standards and safety in the field of electricity. Demonstrate knowledge of electrical theory and apply this knowledge in the construction and operation of basic electrical systems. Show proper care and use of electrical tools and materials and be able to requisition these items from a supplier or stockroom. With the use of the National Electrical Code, read and draw basic blueprints for electrical installations. Develop plans from communications with others. Demonstrate working knowledge of electrical construction procedures in residential and industrial installations at an entry-level basis. Troubleshoot electrical circuits with the use of metering devices and electrical diagrams. Demonstrate knowledge needed to install different types of electrical conduit at an entry-level status. Demonstrate knowledge in basic motor control for single- and three-phase circuits. Demonstrate knowledge in the basic repair of single- and three-phase motors.
