The art education program at Humboldt State gives you the tools to help others create and appreciate art. Our art education curriculum provides the foundation to successfully teach art in K-12th grades and prepares you to enter California's mandatory fifth-year, single-subject teaching credential program. Humboldt State's Art Department offers an approved subject matter waiver program through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. A Well-Rounded Program The art education curriculum is a combination of service learning experiences, studio art courses, and art history. The lower division core classes give you a working facility with a wide range of art media, styles, and equipment. This strong foundation is critical if you are to effectively teach a range of arts. Likewise, your upper division courses will provide you the opportunity to concentrate in a particular studio area and master the pedagogical skills you'll need to develop art curricula that engage an increasingly diverse student body. First-Hand Experience As an art education student, you will familiarize yourself with the California Visual and Performing Arts Framework and the California Content Standards in order to develop strategies for teaching and lessons for instruction. We also have a service-learning component built into the art education classes. You'll have the opportunity to develop curriculum and teach art in HSU's Studio School for children and teens, local schools and docent high school students at the local galleries and museums.
