The School of Nursing and Allied Health offers a rigorous nursing curriculum that includes academic and clinical performance requirements. The BSN degree prepares students as generalists, capable of working in a variety of settings. In addition, students are prepared for graduate studies in nursing. Accreditation: National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas. What will I experience at HBU? Courses have clinical experiences in all of the major hospitals in the Texas Medical Center and in numerous community health sites. In addition, most hospitals in the area offer opportunities for students to be selected for work-study programs. Approximately 10 students per school are selected, hired by the hospital and work about 24 hours per month. Students are paid for their work and, in addition, receive scholarship support from the institution. Students study intensive care nursing at Memorial Hermann Hospital, one of the nation's leading trauma and burn centers. During this study, they eyewitness the operation of Life Flight and the Shock Trauma ICU. BSN students have a series of courses on community and public health which explores the nurse's role in numerous sites including school nursing, home health care and long-term care, as well as care for the homeless, and adult daycare programs for elderly with Alzheimer's disease. The School of Nursing and Allied Health in partnership with the Fifth Ward Congregational Health Coalition has provided health fairs, senior groups health education, home visits, and health promotion plans to under served populations. Some graduates have gone into research, while those who enjoy technology and computers can enter the world of nursing informatics. Program Description The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program prepares graduates to promote health and healing through direct care and management and coordination of care for individuals, families, groups, and communities. There is a core curriculum required of all undergraduate nursing students. BSN students take additional courses designed to develop the proficiencies for the baccalaureate level practice. The program prepares graduates to take the examination for Registered Nurse (R.N.) licensure offered by the Texas Board of Nursing. The degree program requires 132 to 134 semester credit hours for completion. There is no other major required for this degree . While no other major is required for this degree, students may consider choosing a minor in a related discipline. Advantages and Opportunities The only baccalaureate level program in the city of Houston that allows students to complete all prerequisite and required courses on one campus. Students have an integrated and traditional four-year college experience. Students benefit from the low student-to-faculty ratio. Classes and clinical experiences are taught by nursing faculty, not graduate assistants. Candidates for the Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing are expected to have earned a prescribed number of points in the Nursing Student Association and demonstrated professionalism as required for the portfolio. 2. Graduating seniors are expected to make application to the Texas State Board Examination for R.N. licensure.
