What will I experience at HBU? Earn proficiency in French certification after 15 credit hours. Take advantage of the opportunity to be a candidate for an Alliance Francaise Scholarship which provides students the opportunity to live and study in France for seven weeks. Study in France at a location of your choice. HBU students have gone to many cities such as Nice, Montpelier, Strasbourg, Grenoble, and Paris. Practice what you learn in the classroom through internships in business and medical, educational and church related fields at places such as the Alliance Francaise and for the City of Houston. Develop your skills further in French writing workshops for creative and life writing. Qualify for a national foreign language honor society, Alpha Mu Gamma. Collaborate with faculty to experience heightened challenges in the French honors program. Where can I go from here? French majors can pursue careers in translation, interpreting, law, medicine, writing, journalism, business, foreign service, government and politics. Our graduates teach French, go to law school, work in television, go to graduate school, have careers in the armed forces, are doctors, dentists, optometrists, and work for many business companies. Program Description The French program is designed to enable students to develop proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing French and familiarity with and appreciation of the French culture. Students can also earn teacher certification. Requirements Students choosing French as a major take 28 semester hours of course work including Beginning French Proficiency (two classes), Continuing French Proficiency (two classes), Individualized French Proficiency, Advancing French Proficiency, Masterworks of French Literature and Culture, and two senior seminar surveys of French literature . Those seeking teacher certification take Beginning French Proficiency (two classes), Continuing French Proficiency (two classes), Individualized French Proficiency, Advancing French Proficiency, Masterworks of French Literature and Culture, two senior seminar surveys of French literature , and three additional semester hours selected from French Composition or Work Internship in France. To be certified to teach French, candidates must also achieve adequate proficiency to pass the Texas Excel Exam (reading, writing, and culture) and the TOPT (speaking) with a rating of Advanced. Students wishing to increase proficiency should take the Work Internship in French or other advanced courses. Advantages and Opportunities Communication: French classes are proficiency-based classes where students develop proficiency to engage in oral and written exchanges in French , to demonstrate understanding of oral and written material in French, and to present information orally and in writing in French . Culture: Students gain knowledge and understanding of the cultures where French is spoken. Connections: In the French classes, students use French to make connections with other subject areas and to acquire information about other subjects. Community: Students participate in communities at home and around the world by using French . Students use the language both within and beyond the University through activities such as participating in cultural events and using technology to communicate. They also have the opportunity of a Work Internship in French. All majors are encouraged to spend time studying and traveling in a country where French is spoken. Students are helped to show evidence of becoming a lifelong learner by using French for personal enrichment and career development. French classes are small, and students receive personal attention from faculty. The Language Center provides a support system of activities for computer, video, and interactive video. The French Club and Alpha Mu Gamma, National Collegiate Honor Society, are active organizations for persons majoring in or interested in French. Credit by Examination: Students coming to the University with language proficiency may receive credit for language proficiency. After Graduation Students with majors in French and Teacher Certification are familiar with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Languages Other Than English and may enter the teaching profession. Students with majors in French may enter graduate school in French literature or enter professional schools in interpreting and translating, business, law, medicine, or seminary.
