Program Description The biology program at Houston Baptist emphasizes the biomedical sciences. In addition to pre-medical and pre-dental preparations, the program provides training for work in research labs and teacher education and supports the nursing, pre-pharmacy, pre-optometry, pre-physical therapy, and pre-physician assistant programs. The biology department is especially strong in the areas of microbiology, histology, physiology, genetics, virology, biotechnology, molecular biology, immunology, and cell biology. Advantages and Opportunities All classes and labs are taught by faculty members with earned Ph.D.s in various areas of biology. The Department has modern, up-to-date labs funded by a $50,000 per year funding project from the Cain Foundation. Each year, the Department places a number of students in practicums at various medical schools and research laboratories, including M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute, the University of Texas Health Science Centers at Galveston and Houston, Baylor College of Medicine, and The Methodist Hospital. These practicums allow students to earn credit toward graduation while working in the labs of some of the leading scientists in the country. It is also possible for students to receive credit by examination. Facilities include four laboratories equipped with modern instrumentation. In particular, these labs contain electrophoresis equipment for separating DNA and protein, a PCR-thermocycler for amplifying DNA, high-pressure liquid chromatograph (HPLC), incubators for tissue culture and bacterial culture, spectrophotometers, BIOPAC equipment for human and animal physiology experiments, and PC computers for data analysis. After Graduation Graduates of the program have become Ph.D.s, physicians, dentists, biotechnicians, researchers, teachers, or have entered other interesting professions.
