The Asian Studies Program at Hofstra University is an interdisciplinary program designed to further understanding of the traditional and modern societies of Asia through teaching, research and service. The major and minor degree programs in Asian Studies equip graduates for a wide variety of career paths. Through the courses and cultural activities associated with the program, the university seeks to foster understanding of the cultural, social and political relationships amongst the various countries in Asia, and the countries of North America and Europe. Through additional outreach activities, the Asian Studies Program at Hofstra also seeks to encourage linkages between Asia, growing Asian American communities in the New York metropolitan area and the university. Founded in the late 1960s, the Asian Studies Program first began to grant degrees in the early 1970s. Courses in the program are taught in numerous disciplinary areas, including Comparative Literature and Languages, Economics and Geography, History, Philosophy and Religion, Political Science, and Business. In addition to courses taught at Hofstra University, the program also supports a number of study abroad programs, and encourages students to study independently in Asia for Asian Studies credit.
