Pharmacy Technician Program Descriptions - PHT The pharmacy technician works directly under the licensed pharmacist. This 1202 clock hour program prepares the technician to enter the work force with the necessary skills to interpret prescriptions or medication orders, prepare and label medications, and to dispense them after careful review by the pharmacist. The technician will be prepared to categorize drugs into therapeutic classifications, distinguish between generic and trade names, and identify the appropriate dosage forms, strength, routes and frequency of administration. The technician has technical responsibilities under the supervision of the pharmacist. Other responsibilities learned are those of coordinating work with others, using tools, measuring, following written and oral instructions, keeping records, performing calculations, computations, and applying formulas. The student is prepared to give careful attention to details, to enhance memorization, and to work with computers. The content of this program courses includes knowledge of the metric system, medical terminology, medicinal drugs, pharmaceutical compounding, sterile techniques, maintenance of inventory, IV preparation, preparing purchase orders, receiving and inventorying supplies, typing and printing prescription labels, delivering medications, pricing prescriptions drug orders and supplies, packaging unit dose packages, patient record systems, control records, data processing, computer applications, employability skills, leadership and human relations skills, health and safety, emergency care, including CPR. This program focuses on planning, management, finance, technical and productions skills, underlying principles of technology, labor issues, community issues, health, safety and environmental issues. It has both a laboratory and clinical component. The prerequisite Health Science Core is included in the program. The student can receive an Occupational Associates Degree with the satisfactory completion of the PHT curriculum. To begin this program the student must successfully complete the school's entrance exam.
