Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic Program Description - EMTP This 1440 clock program prepares students for employment as Emergency Medical Technicians-Paramedic to function at the advanced pre-hospital emergency level and treat various medical/trauma conditions using appropriate equipment, and materials. This program is the highest level for a career in emergency medical services, an essential component in continuum of care. The EMT-P can work for the fire department, ambulance company or hospital emergency room. This program is approved by Florida Department of Health. The student may receive an Occupational Associate Degree with the satisfactory completion of the Core curriculum of Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic and will be eligible to sit for the certifying state national registry examination. To begin this program the student must successfully complete the school's entrance exam. Criteria for Admission to the EMT-Paramedic Program: A current State of Florida or National Registry certificate in EMT-B and a current American Heart Association BLS CPR card. EMT-P Occupational Outcomes This program prepares students for employment as emergency medical technicians-paramedic to function at the advance level pre-hospital emergency level and treat various medical/trauma conditions using appropriate equipment and materials. This program is the advance level for a career in emergency medical services. The curriculum content includes patient assessment. airway management, cardiac arrest, external bleeding and shock, traumatic injuries, fractures, dislocations, sprains, poisoning, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, acute abdomen, communicable diseases, and patients with abnormal behavior, alcohol and drug abuse, the unconscious state, emergency childbirth, burns, environmental hazards, communications, reporting, extrication, and transportation of patients. EMT ? P Program Objectives Upon completion of this program the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the health care delivery system and health occupations. 2. Demonstrate the ability to communicate and use interpersonal skills effectively. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the Emergency Medical Technicians-Paramedic legal and ethical responsibility including HIPAA. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of and apply wellness and disease concepts. 5. Recognize and practice safety and security procedures including domestic violence. 6. Recognize and respond to emergency situations including BLS-CPR. 7. Recognize and practice infection control procedures including OSHA. 8. Demonstrate computer skills. 9. Demonstrate employability skills. 10. Demonstrate knowledge of blood borne diseases, including AIDS. 11. Demonstrate application of basic math and science skills. 12. Demonstrate knowledge of the EMT-P care system. 13. Describe maintenance of the EMT-P care system. 14. Describe medical, legal, and ethical issues specific to the EMT-P. 15. Demonstrate the ability to perform an initial or baseline assessment, including baseline vital signs and ongoing assessment with sample history as needed. 16. Demonstrate the ability to lift and move patients safely. 17. Perform basic and advanced airway clearance and management. 18. Perform focused and detailed history and physical examinations. 19. Demonstrate the ability to communicate properly orally, and in writing. 20. Assist patient in an emergency situation in administration of medications. 21. Respond correctly to various emergency situations. 22. Manage various trauma and emergency situations for various age groups. 23. Demonstrate knowledge of the emergency service operation.
