Electrocardiograph Technologist Program Description -EKG The 465 clock hour program is designed to prepare students for employment as an Electrocardiograph aides (Industry Title), electrocardiograph technicians and cardiovascular technologists. The program also provides supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in this occupation. The content includes, but is not limited to, communication and interpersonal skills, overview of human anatomy and physiology with emphasis on cardiac and vascular systems, medical terminology and transcription, patient care techniques, medical instrumentation, cardiovascular drugs, interpretation of monitoring and testing results, medical ethics, cardiac wellness and rehabilitation, safe and efficient work practices, CPR-(BLS) and standing employability skills. This course provides reinforcement of basic skills in English, mathematics and science appropriate for the job preparatory programs this is accomplished through vocational classroom instruction and applied laboratory procedures or practice. This cluster of programs focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understanding and demonstration of the following elements of the health care industry; planning, management, finance, technical and production skills, underlying principles of technology , labor issues, community issues and health, safety, and environmental issues. The student may receive a Diploma of completion with the satisfactory completion of the Core curriculum, electrocardiograph aide and electrocardiograph technology and will be eligible to sit the certifying examination. The prerequisite Health Science Core is included in the program. To begin this program the student must successfully complete the school's entrance exam. EKG Occupational Outcomes This program is designed to prepare students for employment as an EKG Technician and or Monitoring Technician . This course provides training to the student in techniques of operating the appropriate medical equipment for performing electrocardiographs on the patient. The student will study the cardiovascular system comprehensively. This course teaches the legal and ethical responsibilities of the Electrocardiograph Technician as it relates to care of the patient. The student may receive a diploma of completion with the satisfactory completion of the Core curriculum of Electrocardiograph . EKG Program Objectives Upon completion of this program the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the health care delivery system and health occupations. 2. Demonstrate the ability to communicate and use interpersonal skills effectively. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the electrocardiograph Technician's legal and ethical responsibility including HIPAA. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of and apply wellness and disease concepts. 5. Recognize and practice safety and security procedures including Domestic Violence training. 6. Recognize and respond to emergency situations including BLS-CPR. 7. Recognize and practice infection control procedures including OSHA. 8. Demonstrate computer skills. 9.
