Mission statement The Sociology Department at Hastings College seeks to develop in students an understanding of the sociological perspective and a useful set of skills for employing the methods of the discipline. Assessment of departmental goals. The sociology major develops competence in two fundamental areas: theory, and statistics and research methods. Student competence in the area of statistics and research methods is assessed (independent of grades) at the sophomore level during the statistics and research methods courses. Student competence in these areas is assessed (independent of grades) at the junior/senior level during during the capstone course for their major (Senior Topics or HSA Seminar). Th ese assessment activities provide the department with a basis for making improvements to the curriculum, teaching techniques, course structures and resource allocation.
