The SCHOOL LEADERSHIP Program (SLP) includes the following three strands of specialization: The Principal Licensure Strand has the following objectives: -to provide experiences and build skills that stimulate the ongoing development of effective school leaders; -to celebrate the role and the influence of the principal on the learning community; -to capitalize on the unique resources of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and The Principals' Center, the first such professional development organization in the country; -to create and refine a specific strand of courses and field experiences designed to help aspiring principals obtain the skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors required of effective school leaders; and to provide courses and experiences necessary for school leaders to meet the requirements of the Massachusetts State Department of Education and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The TEACHER LEADERSHIP Strand of the School Leadership Program is designed for teachers who wish to extend their influence beyond the classroom's four walls without leaving classroom teaching. The strand introduces participants to a variety of new leadership roles and perspectives and provides them with the curricular, pedagogical, political, and organizational skills necessary for implementing school reforms. Participants in the strand will have the opportunity to: -develop a deeper understanding of teaching and learning; -enhance their understanding of school culture; -assess the barriers to school change and develop strategies to overcome them; -learn to utilize networks and coalitions; -analyze new models of leadership and collegiality; -learn to promote collaboration with parents and school administrators; and -reconceptualize the role that teachers, working together, might play in reforming schools. The SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT Strand of the School Leadership Program is designed for individuals who want to improve children's learning and well-being in roles other than classroom teachers or principals. Such individuals might wish to be active in charter or private schools, nonprofit education agencies, or other less traditional educational settings. The strand introduces individuals to a variety of new leadership roles and provides them with skills in pedagogical, curricular, organizational, political, and entrepreneurial sectors. Participants who elect this focus will explore questions such as: -How can I have an effect on student achievement if I am not a teacher or a principal? -What role can (and should) nonprofit educational agencies play in setting school reform agendas? -If I want to establish a nontraditional school , where should I start? -What do I need to know about curriculum, pedagogy, financial management, and governance?
