Substantial previous knowledge of philosophy is normally required. Candidates usually have a bachelor's or master's degree in philosophy . Applicants less well prepared in philosophy may be admitted under special conditions if they have a grounding in mathematics or the natural or social sciences. Applicants are required to take the GRE (general), and to submit a sample of their written work. Very roughly, the requirements break into five groups: -Course requirements: Students must take a specified number of courses and distribute these courses among various areas, so as to gain a broad education in philosophy . -Logic requirement: Students must achieve competence in basic logic. -Language requirement: Students must achieve a reasonable reading competence in a foreign language (typically, German). -Second-year Paper: Students must demonstrate an ability to identify and pursue an extended, independent research project. (This requirement fulfills the same function that is fulfilled in many other Departments by "general exams".) -Oral Topical Examination, Thesis, and Oral Thesis Exam: Students submit a 'prospectus' outlining their plans for their disseration and then actually write one.
