Theatre Arts from Hartwick College is a Campus Bachelor Theatre degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. Hartwick's Theatre Arts major is a small program that thinks big! If you want to think, breathe, and live theatre, this is the program for you! Our classes are small enough to allow students to have a one-on-one relationship with their professors and advisors, but our department is still large enough to support 15 to 20 productions a year, with plenty of opportunity for hands-on learning. Our faculty is deeply committed to Hartwick's liberal arts mission. We believe that effective theatre training must build on a broad educational foundation. The theory, history, and literature of theatre are all critical aspects of a theatre arts curriculum, but we also recognize that the test of theory is in its application - that theatre skills are best learned by doing theatre . In Introduction to Theatre, students work in small groups to write and produce their own original short plays. Fundamentals of Design allows students to become acquainted with the design and construction tools of the theatre , learning skills which they will then use in Play Production, a class dedicated to having students direct, design, and produce a one-act play of their choice. For a Senior Project or Thesis, Theatre Arts majors have following options: direct a long one-act play (45 minutes or more), design a main stage or musical, do original research and write a research based thesis, do a creative writing project (ex. adapt a story into a play), act as a dramaturg for a mainstage production, or do a playwriting, or screen writing project. Our program has proven to be a success. Many of our students participate in summer internships and post-grad apprenticeship programs, which open doors to great jobs in theatre or theatre-related fields.
