PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Hartnell College Animal Health Technology Program offers a comprehensive program that focuses on skills and knowledge relating to veterinary medicine. The program is a demanding and academically challenging two-year course of study that requires a supplemental application for admission. AHT is designed for students preparing for jobs as Registered Veterinary Technicians . Students enrolled in the AHT Program will have opportunities to explore many aspects of veterinary medicine including shelter medicine, marine animal medicine/research, laboratory animal medicine/research, small and large animal medicine, and exotic animal medicine. Graduates receive an Associate in Science Degree in Animal Health Technology and are eligible to sit for State and National Board Examinations for Registration as a Veterinary Technician. The AHT Program is not intended to be a pre-veterinary or veterinary medicine curriculum. The demand for Registered Veterinary Technicians is high. Job opportunities for graduates include positions in companion and large animal private practice, clinical laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, education, marine animal medicine/research, government agencies, and the biomedical field. PROGRAM OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of the Animal Health Technology program, a student should be able to: demonstrate proficiency in safe direct veterinary nursing care to animals by using evidence-based practice in veterinary technology. utilize critical thinking skills to provide effective veterinary nursing care for a variety of species throughout their developmental stages. utilize effective communication skills in veterinary nursing/client and professional relationships in the practice of veterinary medicine. demonstrate sound leadership principles and management skills, including delegation and supervision of veterinary nursing care being delivered by others.
