COURSE DESCRIPTION: Medical Assistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices and clinics of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, and optometrists running smoothly. Duties vary, depending on office location, size, and specialty. In small practices, medical assistants usually are "generalists" who may handle both administrative and clinical duties and report directly to an office manager, physician, or other health practitioner. In larger practices Medical Assistants tend to specialize in a particular area under the supervision of a department administrator. This training program prepares the student to function in the Administrative (Front Office) and the Clinical (Back Office) areas of a medical office. The program includes Medical Language and Anatomy, Professionalism, Legal & Ethical aspects, Communication, Office Equipment Operation, Health Insurance and Medical Record Management, Safety and Infection Control. The practical clinical component includes Assisting with Physician Procedures, Medical Equipment Operation, Laboratory Procedures, Medication Administration, Emergencies and First Aid/CPR. The course follows standards of the American Association of Medical Assistants and includes externship in a medical office or clinic. GOALS: Each student will have obtained the skills necessary for entry-level employment in a medical office. Upon receiving Certificate of Completion, students are eligible to take the Certification Examination given by the California Medical Assistant Association.
