The Journalism major prepares students for careers in journalism or related occupations. The major focuses on reporting, writing, editing, and production for newspapers and magazines and online news sites. Some graduates of the journalism program also carry these skills into advertising or public relations, broadcast news, business, government, law and graduate schools. The journalism major blends the skills required of journalists with courses that focus the ethics, traditions and the theories of news and of a free press and how it relates to democracy. Most courses are taught in the Journalism and Broadcast Center, which includes a computer lab. The required courses in the skills track include Introduction to Journalistic Writing, News Writing and Reporting, Public Affairs Reporting, Photojournalism and News Editing and Design. The required courses in the theory track include Journalism History, Media Law and an upper-division News Seminar. Elective courses, of which students must choose two, include Journalism Ethics, Literary Journalism , and an upper-division reporting course that may focus on religion, sports, arts and entertainment or the judicial system, depending on student interest.
