Social Work from George Mason University is a Campus Master Sociology degree that prepares you for a Human Services career. Mission The Program seeks to prepare social workers for advanced professional practice who are innovative leaders bringing superior management, interpersonal, technological, research, and communication skills to the human service delivery system. Through a concentration in either Organizational Leadership and Social Change or Clinical Social Work Practice, graduates will be prepared to strengthen their communities, stimulate positive change through advocacy, social and political action, and help meet the local, national, and global challenges of the new century. The Program builds upon a foundation of generalist social work knowledge and skills that integrates micro and macro theory and practice, and emphasizes empowerment and systems transformation. This foundation equips students to enhance human well-being and to promote social and economic justice through ethical professional practice with culturally diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Goals 1. To prepare social workers with knowledge and advanced skills in administration and supervision, social policy, and community practice to enhance human well-being and social functioning, and to alleviate poverty, oppression, and social injustice. 2. To prepare ethical social work leaders who stimulate positive change locally, nationally, and internationally through advocacy, social action, community empowerment and prevention in diverse political contexts. 3. To prepare social workers with exceptional oral and written communication skills for practice with culturally diverse colleagues and client systems of all sizes in a variety of professional contexts. 4. To provide innovative curricula built on a liberal arts base, informed by empowerment and systems perspectives, and grounded in the profession's history, purpose, and philosophy that advance critical thinking, technological proficiency, self-reflection, autonomy, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional development. 5. To equip social workers with the advanced skills in research design and data analysis to systematically evaluate practice, and to contribute to the generation of knowledge to advance the profession. 6. To prepare competent social workers to practice internationally with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities without discrimination with respect to clients' age, class, color, culture, disability, ethnicity, family structure, gender, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation.
