Genesee's program was designed in cooperation with the biotechnology departments at several four-year colleges and universities in New York State providing a strong foundation for careers as a biotechnician. This professional sets up and operates laboratory equipment and experiments, gathers and records data, calculates results, and assists in research and in the manufacture of new products or systems, all under the guidance of scientists. There is a high demand for this type of employment in research laboratories in universities, as well as pharmaceutical and food processing companies. At Genesee, you'll receive a foundation of knowledge in Biology, Molecular Biology, and Microbiology and supplement your class time with hands-on experience in Genesee's well-equipped biology laboratories. Experts in the field are invited to present seminars about various topics as well. Courses in the program focus on developing skills in the following areas: Bacteriological Methods studies laboratory safety including sterile techniques, selecting and preparing differential media, assaying plaque, microscopy, bacterial culturing techniques, preparation of reagents and stains, and bacterial conjugation and DAN transformation. Cell and Tissue Culture covers culture equipment and safety, sterile, aseptic and subculturing techniques, cell transfection, quantitative methods such as cell count, viability and differentiation, immunohistochemistry including cryopreservation and immunostaining. Electrophoresis Equipment and Operation, focuses on PAGE principles, agarose electrophoresis, laboratory report writing, micropipetting techniques, gel photography and preparation including calculation of molecular weights, image analysis, enzyme mapping and restriction digests. Genetics Laboratory and Research Techniques introduces cloning techniques including restriction digestion, ligation and transformation; PCR amplification and primer designs; DNA isolation and fingerprinting; DNA quantification; protein separation methods; chromatography including size exclusion and ion-exchange; bioinformatics; and Mendelian genetics and crosses.
