Surgical Technology from Gateway Technical College is a Campus Associate Surgery degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Surgical Technology graduates function as a part of the surgical team in hospitals, surgical centers, and clinics under the direction of professional nurses and surgeons. Two academic years of classroom instruction, laboratory practice, and hospital experience prepare the graduate to function in the operating room and/or the central processing department. The graduate is qualified to prepare the surgical environment and function as a member of either the sterile or the nonsterile team during surgical procedures. As a member of the sterile surgical team, the surgical technologist is able to create the sterile environment and prepare and handle all supplies, instruments, equipment, and medications used within the sterile field. As a member of the nonsterile team, the surgical technologist may be assisting the professional nurse and acting under the direct supervision of the professional nurse in performing some specific nursing care skills. However, the surgical technologist does not take the place of the professional nurse in making decisions regarding interpretation of care needed, documenting interpretation of observations, or performing any tasks specifically coming under the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act. Graduates of this prog. will be eligible to take the national exam to be a Certified Surgical Technologist. PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES Graduates of the Surgical Technology Program should be able to: 1. Apply health science principles to the peri-operative environment. 2. Apply principles of disinfection and sterilization to the surgical environment, equipment, and instrumentation. 3. Maintain principles of aseptic technique in the surgical environment. 4. Prepare the operating room by gathering equipment and supplies. 5. Pass instruments, equipment, and supplies. 6. Provide a safe, efficient, and supportive environ. for the peri-operative patient. 7. Anticipate the sequence of events during surgical procedures. 8. Prepare and manage medications and solutions. 9.
