Program Description: The Perioperative Nursing program is designed to provide a basic foundation of knowledge for the registered nurse interested in working in the operating room setting. Based on safety of patient care the registered nurse will become knowledgeable of the ?A.O.R.N. Standards of Practice?, perform operating room techniques in the scrub and circulator role and gain exposure to the general surgery arena. Upon successful graduation with a certifi cate this program will prepare the registered nurse for employment in an operating room , for orientation with a preceptor, and provide them with knowledge to function while learning specialties of the operating room. The hybrid format involves student participation on-line including assessment and dialogue with a registered nurse with a current operating room background. Students will complete hands-on lab experience to familiarize them with duties of the operating room nurse in the perioperative services. Clinical experience will allow the student to gain experience in the scrub and circulating role and learn the circulator?s role in caring for the patient in pre-op holding, the operating room and the post-anesthesia care unit. The scope of practice of the perioperative nurse includes opportunities as charge nurse, director of perioperative services, operating room manger, materials manager, educator, fi rst assistant, specialty leader, and private employment in a surgical offi ce or as a surgical assistant.
