Advocacy skills for health promotion, disease prevention, and health risk reduction. Interpersonal effectiveness skills. A lifelong pursuit of optimal wellbeing. A holistic approach for enhancing and balancing mind, body, and spirit. Our program encourages students to develop skills in assessing individual and community health needs, planning, implementing, and evaluating effective health promotion programs and acting as a resource person for health information. Communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and awareness of behavior change challenges throughout the lifespan are emphasized. Students are given an opportunity through service learning to bridge the theoretical training received in the classroom with practical application in the community. The model of the Educator as Theorist and Practitioner was developed as descriptive of the purposes, attitudes, and goals in preparing professionals for productive service as an educator. The conceptual framework is organized around four unifying threads: the learner and learning, social context, methodology, and professional development. The Department of Physical Education, Wellness, and Sport Studies seeks to empower students to live out the role of theorist and practitioner through course work, personal influence, field experiences, and modeling.
