Overview and Objectives: The overall goal of the Mechanical Engineering Program is to provide the student with a fundamental and application based education. A part of this preparation is to recognize and respond to ethical and public issues, including safety, social and environmental concerns. To facilitate and support student development, the department has up-to-date laboratories for education and research, including strength of materials lab, fluid mechanics lab, heat transfer lab, automatic control lab, computer graphics and CAD lab. A technician and a machine shop support these labs. The ME Programs maintains an up-to-date curriculum, has modern laboratories, well- qualified faculty and a strong academic and career advising system. Students have access to the University Center for Experiential Learning and to the Faculty. Program Objectives (A) Provide mathematics, science and core engineering science courses for a strong foundation for problem formulation and problem solving in both thermal and mechanical systems areas. (B) Provide the ability to use modern skills, tools and techniques by integrating computer skills throughout the ME curriculum including software for simulation, graphics, data manipulation, probability and statistics, and programming. (C) Provide design experience for components, processes, and systems integrated throughout the curriculum and culminating with a capstone senior design project that includes both oral and written communication of project outcomes. (D) Provide laboratory experience in thermal and mechanical systems including conducting of experiments, the design of several experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and formal written technical reports. (E) Provide a broad education through the Core of Discovery emphasizing development of personal values and ethical responsibility to daily and professional engineering life, development of skills necessary for experiencing informed literary and aesthetic judgement, development of student appreciation of diverse cultures and societies, appreciation of working with people, and a knowledge of contemporary issues.
