Women's and Gender Studies from Furman University is a Campus Bachelor Women's Studies degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. Your schedule at Furman will allow plenty of room for courses taken outside your major and your General Education Requirements (GERs). Some students opt to take their electives along a certain theme, or concentration. This program is not a minor or a second major, but rather a completed group of interrelated courses that appears on your transcript. Furman currently offers six interdisciplinary concentrations: Women's and Gender Studies , Environmental Studies, Classical Studies , Latin American Studies, Black Cultures in the Americas, and English for Speakers of Other Languages. Each consists of four to six courses from at least three academic departments. You can declare a concentration before or after completing the appropriate classes. The Concentration The Women's and Gender Studies concentration questions the limitations placed on women and men by traditional gender roles. In doing this it alerts students to an important dimension of human experience often ignored in conventional curricula. While courses in Women's and Gender Studies may have departmental homes, they raise questions that inevitably cross disciplinary boundaries. A concentration in Women's and Gender Studies truly embodies the idea of ?liberal arts;? it is interdisciplinary and unifying, teaches analytical skills, assumes a problem solving stance, and promotes socially useful ends by bringing anew perspective to existing questions. Courses in Women's and Gender Studies examine women and men in different historical and modern societies and the ways in which political, social, and economic factors affect their status and outlook. The faculty members involved in the program come from a wide range of departments across the Furman campus, and include Modern Languages, Religion, Economics, and Biology professors. This diversity allows students concentrating in Women's and Gender Studies to obtain perspectives that span the entire broad range of the academic community.
