Latin American Studies from Furman University is a Campus Bachelor Latin American Studies degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. Your schedule at Furman will allow plenty of room for courses taken outside your major and your General Education Requirements (GERs). Some students opt to take their electives along a certain theme, or concentration. This program is not a minor or a second major, but rather a completed group of interrelated courses that appears on your transcript. Concentrations support the goal of a liberal arts education by focusing on a particular topic from the perspective of a number of different academic disciplines. Furman currently offers six interdisciplinary concentrations: Women's and Gender Studies , Environmental Studies, Classical Studies , Latin American Studies, Black Cultures in the Americas, and English for Speakers of Other Languages. Each consists of four to six courses from at least three academic departments. You can declare a concentration before or after completing the appropriate classes. The Latin American Studies concentration complements a student's chosen major by providing a broad perspective on Latin America. Courses offered in the concentration, which draws from many departments, include Anthropology, Art, Biology, Health and Exercise Science, History, Philosophy, Political Science and Spanish. Topics covered in the course of study include literature, politics, history, society, ecology and the environment. Students with scientific interests may find themselves choosing classes such as Tropical Ecology and Biology of the Andes, while those with a more linguistic mindset might decide to focus on Readings in Spanish-American Literature and Spanish-American Narrative. If you decide to declare a concentration in Latin American Studies, you must take an interdisciplinary (IDS) course entitled Issues in Latin America. The focus of this capstone course varies depending on the interests and expertise of the instructor. Past courses have explored sustainable development, current politics, and the intersection of literature and history. In addition to completing your three courses, you must also display competency in the most widely-spoken language of Latin America, Spanish. View more details on Furman University .
