Black Cultures in the Americas from Furman University is a Campus Bachelor American Studies degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The Black Cultures in the Americas program examines, from numerous disciplinary perspectives, the experiences of people of African descent in Black Atlantic societies, including the United States , the Caribbean, and Latin America. Courses in the program explore the innovative, complex, and distinctive social structures and cultural traditions that Africans in the diaspora have created. Students are exposed to the historical, cultural, political, economic, and social development of people of African descent. Emphasizing a diasporic framework of analysis, the program demands that students acquire both an analytic ability rooted in a traditional discipline and interdisciplinary skills of investigation and research. Black Cultures in the Americas offers training of special interest to those considering admission to graduate and/or professional schools, and careers in education, journalism, law, business management, city planning, international relations, politics, psychology, publishing, or social work. The interdisciplinary structure of the program offers students an opportunity to satisfy the increasingly rigorous expectations of admissions committees and prospective employers for a broad liberal arts perspective that complements specialized knowledge of a field. BCA's mission is to foster understanding and critical interpretation of the history, development, conditions, status, and cultures of the diverse peoples of African descent living in the various societies of the Western Hemisphere. However, the concentration's primary focus on the black experience in the Americas does not preclude any region of the African Diaspora from the scope of its interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary scholarship and public programs. It is also significantly concerned with the interrelation between the diverse cultures of people of African descent throughout the Americas in their interaction with other indigenous and immigrant peoples, cultures, and formations. This will be enabled through a series of speakers, conferences, symposia, and CLP's; and, through various courses taught regularly across the Humanities and Social Sciences.
