Africana Studies from Franklin and Marshall College is a Campus Bachelor Area Studies degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The Africana Studies program at F&M is unique in that it is the first program that was initiated due to student demand. We prepare students to succeed in a diverse society by enabling them to see the world from a host of perspectives originating in Africa and regions of the Diaspora. Offered in coordination with dozens of academic departments at F&M, Africana Studies provides significant research projects locally, regionally, and throughout Africa. As an Africana Studies major, you will have the opportunity to break new ground and literally create original fields of research in innovative areas. Recent research projects have included studies on the evolution of hip-hop, pop culture, gender issues on the African continent, and reverse colonization. The interdisciplinary study of Africa and its people will take you back to the cradle of civilization. The range of interrelated histories, cultures, and intellectual contributions of Africans and those of African origin is truly staggering. The program affords numerous travel opportunities as well as internships for credit at relevant sites, including the Urban League of Lancaster, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Smithsonian Institute.
