Program Description To earn an associate degree in the Industrial Welding Technician program, you must complete 67 credits. The program is offered both full-time day and part-time evening. The daytime program requires some evening classes over the two-year period. The program operates on a fall/spring basis and allows new students to enter at the start of any of these sessions provided there are openings. The selection of electives provides you with the opportunity to choose courses which may help you advance in a particular area of your chosen career. As a student entering the program, you can seek advanced standing in the program based on your industrial experience. This credit is issued after oral, written and/or performance testing. Your previous schooling will also be evaluated for credit. Program Outcomes The primary goal of the Industrial Welding Technician program is to prepare the student for employment as an advanced-level welder . Graduates will demonstrate proficiency in: Setup and welding using welding processes including shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding , flux cored arc welding, submerged arc welding , gas tungsten arc welding and plasma arc welding . Setup and operation of fabrication including press brakes (manual and CNC), saws (manual and CNC), iron workers, punching operation, lasers, abrasive water-jet, and rolling and tube bending. Use of thermal cutting processes including oxy-fuel cutting equipment, air carbon arc and plasma cutting equipment. Blueprint Reading. Basic Pattern Drafting Methods. Interpretation of Welding Symbols. Electrical troubleshooting as it relates to welding power sources. Interpretation of Welding Codes and Qualification Tests: AWS, ASME and API. Writing and Qualification of Welding Procedures. Setup and operation of a robotic welding cell. Survey of welding processes including design concepts and costs of welding. Understanding of welding metallurgy including classification of metals, effects of heating and cooling on metals, testing of mechanical properties and identification of metals.
