Career Opportunities As an over-the-road (long-distance) truck driver , you are a professional driver who delivers goods between locations hundreds, or even thousands, of miles apart. If you are a local truck driver , you move goods from terminals and warehouses to factories, stores and homes in the area. As a skilled driver, you maneuver trucks into tight parking spaces, through narrow alleys and up to loading platforms. Our staff is well connected to employers in the trucking industry. Generally, as a graduate of the program who is age 21 or older, you can find employment with over-the-road companies such as large chain food stores, manufacturing plants and trucking companies (common or contract carriers or private motor carriers). If you are under age 21, you can obtain employment driving intrastate routes. You must be able to cope with family, social and company concerns that are unique to this occupation. Program Description The Truck Driving program is a course of study which allows you to progress with professional staff assistance according to your specific skills and ability. The curriculum focuses on developing backing and driving skills through classroom, lab and roadway experiences. You will be attending 43 hours per week, Monday through Friday for 10 weeks, totaling 430 hours. In order to graduate, you must complete all the skill competencies in the Truck Driving program. Additional weeks of instruction are available if you need extra help. Your courses will include everyday contact that a professional truck driver has with fellow drivers , dispatchers, shippers, consignees, mechanics, the general public, law enforcement personnel and immediate family. All required entry-level education materials are thoroughly covered. To qualify for entry into the Truck Driving program, you must possess a valid driver's license and be able to pass a DOT physical examination including a drug test. If you are planning to pursue truck driving as a career, you should possess good dexterous skills, patience, self-discipline, maturity, and a good driving record. The Fox Valley Technical College (FVTC) truck driving programs and staff are members of the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association (WMCA) and the National Association of Publicly Funded Truck Driving Schools (NAPFTDS). Our ten-week truck driving program is also certified by the Professional Truck Driving Institute (PTDI). Program Outcomes Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will: Drive a commercial vehicle safely. Inspect the vehicle to ensure safety of operation . Demonstrate knowledge of the laws pertaining to the operation of a commercial vehicle in the United States. Complete appropriate paperwork correctly. Demonstrate ability to plan trips and routes including managing loads and weight distribution. Communicate effectively with peers, customers and supervisors. Security of a commercial vehicle.
