Career Opportunities As a mechanical designer, you may be employed in a manufacturing plant to help plan, test and inspect machines and equipment or to work with the engineer in eliminating product problems. Program Description This associate degree program is designed to prepare you to work in the field of mechanical design technology. As a graduate of this program, you work closely with a mechanical engineer initially doing work which is similar to that of a drafter by making mechanical drawings of products and machine components. With experience, you progress to work of a more technical nature. You investigate other areas of the design process such as strength requirements, material choice, product improvement, and cost savings. You will use your creativity to solve problems and create new products. The curriculum is designed to provide you with the broad technical competence needed to be a productive team member in an engineering department. You will develop skill and ability in preparing and interpreting drawings and solving design problems such as selecting the correct size and type of shafts, bearings, gears and fasteners. Program Outcomes Mechanical Design Technology graduates will be able to: Use appropriate problem-solving methods to identify, analyze and solve problems in an engineering environment. Select and utilize various CAD and other engineering application software. Continue their own personal goals through achieving additional technical skills. Prepare mechanical drawings which communicate design and details for fabrication and/or assembly. Design products in accordance with customer specifications.
