Program Description Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (30-531-303) is a 144-hour entry-level program that will train you to respond on an ambulance as an integral member of the pre-hospital emergency care team. You will be able to provide efficient and immediate emergency pre-hospital care to the ill or injured, and continue that care during transport to a medical facility. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians-Basic written and practical examinations in order to be licensed as an EMT-Basic in Wisconsin. This program, in conjunction with two-year degree programs in criminal justice, fire protection or nursing, can further enhance your opportunities for job placement and career advancement. This program is also a prerequisite for consideration in admitting you to advanced pre-hospital training programs such as Intermediate Technician, Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate, and Paramedic. Topics covered in the program include preparatory airway, C-PAP, Combitube, patient assessment, medical emergencies, nebulizer, glucagon administration, blood sugar evaluation, trauma, infants and children, operations, clinical/field experience, and defibrillation. Program Outcomes Function in a basic level of prehospital emergency care doing the following: assessment of patients, cardiac and respiratory assessment skills, care of trauma/medical patients using advanced airway management skills, with greater scope of responsibility with blood glucose monitoring and administration of specific medications. Functions under protocols for emergency patient care. Possesses critical thinking and decision making skills in the provision of prehospital care and in selected emergency room settings. Take a leadership role at the emergency scene as the highest level of emergency care provider present. Makes inter-facility transfers of patients within defined protocols. Provide specialty skills in providing airway management, i.e. C-PAP. Prepared to take and be successful on the National Registry of EMT.
