Career Opportunities As an Automotive Collision student, you work on vehicles that have minor and major damage. Repairing minor damage includes repairing dents in vehicle bodies and repairing plastic parts on vehicles. It also includes replacing bolted-on parts such as doors, fenders, and trunk lids. Repair of major damage includes structural repair of unitized bodies and vehicles with conventional frames in addition to replacement of weld-on panels such as quarter panels and roofs. As a graduate, you may be employed by an independent body shop, automobile dealer shop, paint company, insurance company, industrial plant, or glass shop. Program Description Training you to repair collision-damaged vehicles is the principle objective of this program. You will experience using the tools needed to repair minor and major vehicle damage. The program also places emphasis on vehicle paint preparation and paint techniques for spot repair and complete vehicle refinishing. You will take two years to complete this program. You will enroll in auto program courses and related courses every semester. As a new student, you can enroll at semester intervals during the year as openings occur. Program Outcomes Upon graduation from the Auto Collision Repair & Refinishing Technician Program, the student will be able to: Identify and use tool equipment. Interpret information on a damage report. Employ primary methods of panel alignment based on knowledge of how panel alignment can affect vehicle performance. Demonstrate basic communication skills needed for dealing with customers and insurance appraisers. Properly remove and replace hoods, deck lids, and latches. Demonstrate proper use of metal straightening tools to remove damage. Use body fillers and specialty fillers properly. Perform outer panel, quarter panel, and roof panel replacement properly. Identify different types of automotive plastics and the proper repair procedures for each of them. Demonstrate the application of a variety of different automotive finishes. Perform both complete and spot repairs and color blending techniques. Use personal safety practices including the use of different types of respiratory protection that are currently available. Apply computer knowledge in the repair of automobiles. Demonstrate the use of air conditioning recharging equipment, and perform air conditioner repairs.
