Mental Health Counseling from Fort Valley State University is a Campus Master Counseling degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. Graduates from the Master of Science Program in Mental Health Counseling will acquire and demonstrate knowledge, skills, experiences, dispositions and technical competencies to function effectively as mental health counselors in the 21st century. Graduates in the Mental Health Counseling Program will be sensitive to the context of all clients, thus creating a climate which allows all clients to grow and develop. Educational experiences facilitate the students with theoretical and applied knowledge in the areas of theory, individual and group process, human growth and development, psychopathology, psychological evaluation, research and professional ethics. Technology is integrated into course content. The two semester internship experiences give students the opportunity to refine and apply their counseling skills. The graduates are eligible for licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in the State of Georgia . The program can also leads to certification by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). Career Opportunities Students who complete this program are eligible for licensure as a professional counselor in the State of Georgia after gaining appropriate supervised practice and passing the State Composite Board Examination for Professional Counselors . Completion of the program may also lead to certification by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). Opportunities for employment may be found in mental health agencies, substance abuse treatment facilities, gerontological facilities, psychiatric hospitals, correctional and rehabilitation centers, VA hospitals and other helping agencies.
