Description of Major The undergraduate program in Early Childhood Education is a full time, four semester program that provides the student with both the academic coursework and the preschool and public school experience necessary to become a certified beginning teacher of children in pre-kindergarten through third grade. All four semesters in the program allow the student to experience working with young children and their teachers. In addition to certain practicum and observation courses in early childhood situations, the program includes: teaching methods in reading and language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, children's literature and materials, and expressive arts. In addition to these curricular areas, emphasis is placed on educational foundations, child development and psychology, nutrition, families, communities, schools and other agencies.
