Social Work from Florida Gulf Coast University is a Campus Master Sociology degree that prepares you for a Human Services career. The Master of Social Work program (MSW), in accord with the mission of Florida Gulf Coast University and the values and ethics of the social work profession, is distinctive among social work programs in its emphasis on one concentration, clinical community practice (CCP). The MSW program prepares graduates for advanced social work practice, based on a solid liberal arts foundation. Students learn specialized clinical intervention skills to work with diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities for an expanded clinical role that integrates policy analysis knowledge, and advocacy, and social action skills for effective community practice. Students may pursue the MSW degree on either a full or part-time basis. Both programs consist of 60 semester hours of coursework and 1,000 hours of field practice. The full-time program takes two years (four semesters) to complete. The part-time program takes three to four years to finish. The foundation year provides training in generalist practice. The advanced concentration year offers specialist training in integrating empowerment oriented clinical practice with community practice (CCP). Students with BSW degrees earned within the past five years from Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited programs may apply for advanced standing on a full-time or part-time basis, and receive a maximum of 30 credit hours of exempted foundation courses; providing an opportunity to graduate with 30 credit hours. The full-time advanced standing program takes eight months to complete. In addition, the full-time and the part-time programs are sequenced and courses must be taken in order. Students are on campus one day a week and both virtual and hybrid courses are offered. Students are required to obtain professional liability insurance before beginning practicum. Master of Social Work graduates work in a variety of settings such as child and family services agencies, schools, geriatric facilities, hospitals, government agencies, court systems, police departments and mental health agencies and in both non-profit and for profit settings, private and public.
