Design and Technology from Florida Atlantic University is a Campus Master Design degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. The concentration in Design will prepare the candidate for pursuit of a career as a professional designer for the theatre and its related fields. The program is founded on the belief that excellence in design comes from an in-depth exploration and understanding of the dramatic text, supported by extensive research and the development of self-discipline, intellect, and imagination. The program stresses artistic expression, understanding of specialized skills, technology, organization, and communication skills. Student work will be realized as part of the productions of the Department of Theatre and Dance. The successful student will begin to develop a personal process of design in the collaborative process of living theatre. The concentration in Technology will prepare the candidate for pursuit of a career as a professional technologist for the theatre and its related fields. This emphasizes excellence in personal work and the mastery of specialized skills and technology, good organization, and clear communication skills. "Hands-on" production work is conducted in the context of a laboratory atmosphere where students are encouraged to take part in the exploration of creative problem-solving and artistic expression. Classroom experience is reinforced by practical application in Department productions. The successful student will be well-equipped to take part in the collaborative process of creating living theatre. The internship program is designed to enable students to make contacts with respected professional theatre companies and when possible to complete requirements for membership in actor or designer unions. Past FAU graduate students have held internships at such prestigious organizations as the WPA Theatre in New York, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Maine Repertory, Cincinnati Shakespeare, The American Repertory Theatre, The Old Globe Theatre, Arena Stage, The Guthrie Theatre, Arkansas Repertory, and numerous other regional theatres across the nation. FAU is also in close proximity to two of Florida's finest theatre companies, The Florida Stage and The Caldwell Theatre, which have supported FAU interns.
