The Evangel University Social Work Program provides bachelor's level students with a sound base of knowledge, values and skills from the generalist perspective which will empower them to integrate their faith and evidenced-based practice within diverse settings and prepare them for graduate education in social work and other related fields. The Evangel University Social Work Program acknowledges its responsibility to the social work profession, to the University, and to the Christian community-- that is, to prepare students for generalist social work practice and/or to continue their education toward the advanced generalist social work graduate degree within an environment which allows each student to integrate a liberal arts education and professional practice training, with a Christian perspective. In order to fulfill this responsibility, the program seeks to provide a living and learning experience, which encourages the development of the whole person. Goals 1. Equip students with a sound base of knowledge, values and skills from the generalist social work perspective in preparation for professional practice. 2. Prepare students to demonstrate use of knowledge and skills necessary to promote system change and social and economic justice. 3. Prepare students to demonstrate an understanding and respect for human diversity including strategies for effective practice. 4. Prepare students to contribute to the social work profession through professional development including graduate education and leadership activities that promote competent social work practice. Objectives Apply the knowledge and skills of a generalist social work perspective to practice with systems of all sizes. Understand and apply theory, principles and skills of social research for generalist social work practice and evaluation. Apply critical thinking skills within the context of generalist social work practice. Use communication skills differentially across client populations, colleagues, and communities. Use theoretical frameworks supported by empirical evidence to understand individual development and behavior across the life span and the interactions among individuals and between individuals and families, groups, organizations and communities. Understand the value base of the profession and its ethical standards and principles and practice accordingly. Understand and interpret the history of the social work profession and its contemporary structures and issues. Analyze, formulate and influence social policies Understand forms of mechanisms of oppression and discrimination and apply strategies of advocacy and social change that advance social and economic justice. Function within the structure of organizations and service delivery systems and under supervision seek necessary organizational change Understand Christian values and ethics as applied to generalist social work practice in a manner that reflects sensitivity to and awareness of diversity. Practice without discrimination and with respect, knowledge and skills related to client's age, class, color, culture, disability, ethnicity, family structure, gender, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex and sexual orientation. Use supervision and consultation appropriate to social work practice.
