As an Accounting graduate entering the field, you should be able to: Understand the terminology used in the accounting profession. Handle all aspects of double-entry bookkeeping for service and merchandising enterprises using both periodic and perpetual systems. Prepare the financial statements for service and merchandising enterprises. Account for petty cash funds, change funds and bank reconciliation. Account for receivables, writing off accounts and discounting notes. Cost inventory under FIFO, LIFO and Average Cost inventory methods (both periodic and perpetual systems covered for FIFO and LIFO). Estimate inventory under the gross profit and retail methods. Calculate depreciation expense under these methods: straight line, units of production and double declining balance. Record disposals of plant assets--similar and dissimilar exchanges. Compute and record the payroll of a firm. Account for corporations: computing dividends per share; recording transactions involving common stock, preferred stock and treasury stock; preparing the stockholders' equity section of the balance sheet, and appropriating retained earnings. Account for deferred income taxes and special items on the income statement. Account for raw materials, factory overhead and direct labor in a manufacturing setting.
