Theological Studies from Episcopal Divinity School is a Campus Master Religious Studies degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS) is a two-year program that satisfies a variety of general academic and vocational purposes. It can serve as preparation for advanced graduate study in related theological disciplines, as a foundation for combining forms of Christian ministry with other professions or as a basis for creating new perspectives on church and society through informed theological study. Students have the option of organizing their program of study around a concentration in studies in Feminist Liberation Theologies. The MATS is not designed for students seeking the educational qualifications required for ordained ministry. MATS students participate in the Foundations course, curriculum conference, and final year conference; they also submit a Statement of Goals and Program, a Competence Grid, and a short final Integration Paper to the faculty Degrees Committee. The primary academic focus of the degree is the achievement of Special Competence in one curriculum area and General Competence in another. These areas may be drawn from the seven canonical areas or one of the three study areas (AGE, CSt, FLT), or may be self-defined areas. Candidates may include field education in their programs, but are not required to do so. The MATS Statement of Goals and Program and the Competence Grid identify and discuss the areas of special and general competence selected by the student; these documents are submitted to the Degrees Committee at the end of the first full year of study.
