Social Work - Elms College

Social Work from Elms College is a Campus Bachelor Sociology degree that prepares you for a Human Services career. The Social Work Department prepares students for entry-level social work positions in a variety of settings, such as in hospitals, nursing homes, mental health centers, correctional settings, child welfare agencies and other social service agencies. The generalist program prepares students to work with clients throughout the life span: children, adolescents, people in early and mid-adulthood, and the elderly. Students are given the opportunity to complete a 40 hour internship in community agencies and international settings. Program Mission The mission of the social work program at Elms College is to educate our students to become competent and effective entry level social work practitioners. We offer a curriculum of liberal arts and professional social work foundations that uphold the traditions, values, and ethics of the social work profession. Our students learn to work within the social work profession for social and economic justice, human understanding and respect, the values of a multicultural society, and a more humane and responsive world opposed to bigotry and oppression. The program serves as a resource for the college, human service agencies, individual practitioners, and the surrounding communities. It exists, as does Elms College, to promote the personal, spiritual, and intellectual development of our students and the general well-being of society. Program Goals To develop in students an appreciation of the beauty, integrity, and potential of all human beings; and the capacity to contemplate the student's own personal, spiritual and intellectual beings and to utilize that knowledge to gain an understanding of their place in the world. To make available to students a comprehensive educational experience that will allow them opportunities to achieve potential as persons, citizens of the world, and social workers. To develop a curriculum that builds on a liberal arts perspective to promote breadth of knowledge, pursuit of truth, critical thinking, communication skills and technological capability. To prepare students for entry level generalist social work practice with individuals, families, groups and communities through a curriculum of liberal arts and professional social work foundations, while upholding the values and ethics of the profession. To prepare students or promote human well-being by strengthening opportunities, resources and capacities of people in their environments. To provide content on population-at-risk and to present content on the dynamics of such risk factors and effective strategies to redress them. To provide a learning context throughout the curriculum and the program that energetically models respect and understanding for persons of diverse backgrounds. To prepare students to work for humane, just, multicultural society and world community.
