The Respiratory Therapist applies scientific knowledge and theory to practical clinical problems of respiratory care . Knowledge and/or skills for performing these functions are achieved through formal programs of didactic, laboratory, and clinical preparation. The Respiratory Therapist is qualified to assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care modalities. Under the supervision of a physician, the Respiratory Therapist may be required to exercise considerable independent clinical judgment in the respiratory care of patients. The capstone course for the AAS Degree is RSPT 2461, Clinical-Respiratory Care Therapy/Therapist III. Included in the capstone for the Respiratory Care Technology is successfully completing the NBRC Self-Assessment Exam for the Registered Therapist. Non-Traditional Credit may be available. Successful completion of this program allows graduates to sit in for the NBRC's Certification Exam, Registry Exam, Pulmonary Function Technologist Exam, and the Perinatal/Pediatric Specialist Exam. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (COARC).
