Human Development from El Camino Community College District is a Campus Associate Family studies degree that prepares you for a Human Services career. The Behavioral and Social Sciences Division at El Camino College offers a variety of Human Development courses designed to enhance student success in college by introducing or strengthening skills necessary to reach education and career goals. Human Development course offerings include: Career Planning Orientation to College Educational Planning and Guidance Strategies for Success in College Strategies for Success in the Workplace Student Athlete Educational Planning El Camino College's Human Development courses are designed to help students focus on their goals, as well as to determine how to achieve them. Also, students may use Human Development courses to investigate career paths and gain knowledge of potential careers. Students are provided opportunities to explore issues such as: how much education or training is required for various majors, how the line of promotion works, what is expected from entry-level employees, what the workplace might be like, and what kind of salary might be expected. Career Planning This essential course provides each student with career planning techniques based on: self-examination of interests, personality, skills, and values. Students participate in assessment inventories, skill exercises, career research, and group activities to find careers that are best suited for specific skills and interests. The Career Center is used for additional research and to further investigate specific work environments. Orientation to College Educational Planning and Guidance This introductory course is designed for first-year college students. Topics covered in the course include: matriculation, financial aid, cultural diversity, instructional styles, learning styles, self-esteem, study skills, decision making, goal setting, and educational planning. Attention is also given to issues unique to specific students, such as international students and students involved with Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOP&S). Strategies for Success in College In this course, students will gain the knowledge, skills and personal/interpersonal awareness necessary for success in college. Students will be personally guided to establish realistic academic and vocational/career goals, while examining their overall goals for their future. Students will also create a personal education plan based on assessment information, self-examination, and knowledge of programs and services provided by the college. Strategies for Success in the Workplace Through this course, students gain personal and interpersonal insights and awareness necessary to be successful on the job. Student Athlete Educational Training Student athletes enrolled in this course will have the opportunity to establish academic and career goals. The course also focuses on the requirements for participating in intercollegiate athletics and students will be guided toward creating a personal education plan.
