Theatre from Eastern Mennonite University is a Campus Bachelor Theatre degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. EMU Theater engages a wide array of productions and performance styles. Welcoming the diverse voices of the American and global communities, the department places a particular emphasis on productions that critically engage our audiences. Recent seasons have explored epic warfare, farcical slapstick, and psychological thrillers. Students from across campus have a voice in selecting these plays, creating an engaged community of musicians, scientists, visual artists, and educators. At EMU, students read the plays, report on them, debate them, help select the season, and play an integral role at every turn in bringing the works to life. Regular entrants in the Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival, our productions receive exterior adjudication from professional directors and designers, and routinely receive nominations in student award categories. This past year, for example, found several students nominated for the national Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship, while an EMU student designer won the regional award for sound design, the second consecutive year an EMU student has received regional recognition from the Kennedy Center. EMU Theater students also stage their own independent works with breathtaking regularity. Recent academic years witnessed student works as diverse as a multi-media anti-war play and a centuries-old English Christmas play staged outdoors. Our frequent Gonzo Theater nights present a unique challenge: view an inspiration posted somewhere on campus, write a short play in under forty-eight hours, and hand it to a director who gets one hour of rehearsal before an audience sees it?scripts in actors' hands?at a late night studio show. Past Gonzo shows, covering topics from Russian modernist poetry to Britney Spears, have packed the house. A student-led improvisation troupe, known for its performance wizardry, regularly fills the campus with wackiness and loud laughs. Students at EMU thus have the opportunity to work in departmental productions as actors, directors, designers, technicians, and playwrights. One student recently commented that at EMU she'd been able to "do everything? but sleep." This is a place where the theater lives. Careers in Theater Recent EMU graduates are working as stage designers, technicians, directors, and actors. Possible careers in theater include acting (stage, television and film), directing, playwriting, design (scenic, costume, lighting and sound), marketing, theater administration, drama ministry, journalism, drama therapy, theater for young audiences, children's theater, technical theater, conflict transformation, theater scholarship and theater education. While at EMU, students may take advantage of our strong Washington Community Scholars' Center, the university's residentialseminar and internship program in the nation's capitol. EMU Theater students are thus afforded the exciting opportunity to engage in internships and advanced theater study with professional companies in one of our country's premier theater communities. Our graduates are active in professional fields such as acting, theater administration, and drama ministry, a breadth of interest also embraced by the department's current students. At EMU, the commitment to developing, sharing and employing our work and gifts is absolute. View more details on Eastern Mennonite University .
