Program Description Founded in 1974, Duke's Center for Canadian Studies is the oldest in the United States; Duke graduate students have written more than 150 theses on Canadian subjects. The program coordinates research, teaching, and outreach about Canada in its North American and world contexts and sponsors speakers and seminars. Canadian Studies also offers modest fellowship, research, and travel support to graduate students carrying out research on Canada. Graduate students may earn a certificate in Canadian Studies by completing three full graduate courses related to Canada, one of which is Interdisciplinary Course 282S; studying or demonstrating proficiency in French, a native North American language, or a "heritage language" used in Canada; and completing a graduate thesis or research project on a Canadian or a comparative topic.
