The broad range of world language courses serves to meet the World Languages' requirements for most academic divisions and is foundational to the department's majors and minors. Objectives The Department of World Languages' objectives are to: Guide students to an understanding and appreciation of world cultures through the study of languages and literary expressions; Provide instruction in the various world languages leading to the development of prescribed competencies in reading, writing, listening, and speaking; Prepare majors for graduate study leading to advanced degrees; Prepare majors for careers in the public and private sectors, including international business, international trade, and related fields; Be central to the University's mission to internationalize its curriculum; Encourage study abroad and international internships; Integrate the study of Louisiana's World Language communities into the general curriculum. Academic Degrees The Department of World Languages provides students the opportunity to major in French & Francophone Studies . The degree program in French and Francophone Studies offers courses in language, literatures, and cultures from France and the French-speaking regions of Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean. The fundamental objectives of the program are to: inculcate linguistic competence; familiarize students with the cultures of these regions; and foster an appreciation of the central role of France's colonial enterprise in the re-imagination of world communities and in the animation of the diverse voices of francophonie resulting from the welding together of Eurocentric and indigenous cosmovisions. The major in French and Francophone Studies will not only provide a solid base for post-baccalaureate studies, but significantly prepare students for a variety of professional careers.
