Social Work from Dana College is a Campus Bachelor Sociology degree that prepares you for a Human Services career. The Dana College Social Work is accredited nationally by the Council on Social Work Education. This is critically important for several reasons. It gives graduates the credentials needed to obtain certification or licensure in all of the states that give certification or licensure on the BSW level. This is important in securing positions with opportunity for upward mobility. In addition, Dana's BSW degree opens doors for graduates to be given advanced placement in graduate schools of social work (for the prestigious MSW degree). This means that the required course load for the MSW is significantly reduced. The Dana College Social Work Department is committed to mentoring each student individually through meetings that go beyond the usual advising. Students meet regularly with faculty members to assess their growth in knowledge, skills, and ethics, with the goal of being ready for professional positions and/or graduate school upon graduation. The step-by-step preparation of our students for professional jobs and graduate school is unique and especially strong, as it blends knowledge attainment with professional skill-building. An early field experience course, SWK 215, usually taken during the sophomore year, gives students an opportunity to explore social work settings in the community. Students gain a wide range of knowledge in early courses, learn theory and practice specific skills in the three Practice Theory and Methods courses, and apply their learning in two intensive practicum courses in the senior year. Seminars related to the practicum courses help students to integrate their learning so that they are ready for professional social work positions or graduate school upon completion of the program.
