Exercise & Sports Studies from D'Youville College is a Campus Bachelor Sport degree that prepares you for a Education career. Exercise & Sports Studies at D'Youville The exercise and sport studies (ESS) program challenges undergraduate students to study the various dimensions of competitive sports, physical fitness and physical activity in society. The ESS bachelor of science (BS) degree program assists students in developing the knowledge to understand how health, physical activity and social factors relate to exercise and sport. In addition, the ESS program provides students with a comprehensive array of courses and practical experiences that will allow for exploration and the understanding of exercise and physical activity in today's society. For those wishing to complement their existing academic area of study or expand their knowledge of ESS, a minor in ESS is also offered. The ESS program leads to a BS of between 122-124 credits, dependent on chosen area of specialization (Track). The program consists of three tracks, each containing 17 courses that meet the D'Youville College core requirements and five foundation courses. Each track then includes specialized coursework from a variety of disciplines to round out a student's educational experience. The ESS curriculum emphasizes the development of strong research skills, writing and oral communication abilities. The ESS program combines flexibility in its curriculum with internship experiences to prepare students to take professional roles upon graduation. The exercise studies track (Track #1) focuses on the health and fitness aspects of the exercise sciences, and prepares students for careers in the fitness industry, such as strength and conditioning or personal training. The sports studies track (Track #2) focuses on the social, psychological, business, and management aspects of the sports and fitness industry. The health professions track (Track #3) is designed for students pursuing an advanced degree in physical therapy. Careers in Exercise & Sports Studies Sports are about more than just fun and games, and today sports and fitness represent a billion dollar industry. The realm of sports and physical activity offers career opportunities in personal training, strength & conditioning, corporate fitness, health education and promotion, and sports & fitness management. The ESS program thoroughly prepares student for advanced degrees in the health professions such as physical therapy and dietetics, as well as in exercise physiology, physical education, health & human performance, or sports medicine. ESS students are given the opportunity to explore various employment and career settings while they complete required internships and practicum requirements. During these experiences, students are encouraged to utilize these experiences to develop contacts with established professionals in the exercise & sports sciences field. The ESS program possesses great flexibility, with the option of three separate areas of specialization. D'Youville's ESS program provides an excellent pathway to graduate programs in physical therapy, education and chiropractic. The ESS program can be coupled with minors in management, dietetics, psychology and sociology.
