Course Description The Surgical Technology program is designed to prepare students to function as members of the surgical team under the supervision and responsibility of the operating room supervisor. Surgical Technologists assist the surgeon and nurses at the operating table by preparing supplies and equipment for use in surgery. The graduate surgical technologist is able to implement methods of sterilization in preparing supplies and instruments, properly set-up the operating room and assist the surgeon as the sterile person on all types of surgical procedures. The course of study and clinical experience is structured in two phases: a pre-clinical phase (6 months) offers the foundation courses on which the students base their knowledge and practice; the clinical phase (8 months) attained at area hospitals offers students the practical knowledge skills that can only be obtained through clinical experience. The daily hours for the clinical portion of the training vary from the regular school schedule.
