Course Description The Accounting Specialist program prepares students for employment in entry-level positions in the accounting field. Students develop bookkeeping principles that emphasize classifying, recording, summarizing numerical data and making computations to compile and keep financial records. Classroom activities include the recording of day-to-day business transactions in journals, ledgers and other accounting forms. Accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, depreciation and financial statements for proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations are covered. In addition, students learn to compute wages and salaries, social security taxes, income-withholding taxes, unemployment taxes and journalized payroll. They arrange computerized accounting systems that include departmental purchases, cash payments, sales cash receipts, payroll data, depreciation, and financial statement analysis. Completers must be able to index 225 digits per minute on the calculator in order to receive a diploma. Microsoft Office software packages are used in this program. Students learn both manual and computerized accounting systems.
