Degree Mission The mission of the B.A. in Religious Studies is to make students aware of the application of the humanistic and social scientific modes of inquiry to religious studies. These include, but are not limited to the effect of religion on the development of historical, philosophical, sociological, anthropological, and psychological perspectives as well as the impact on social values. Employing such approaches, students will gain experience in the academic investigation of religion as a fundamental dimension of human experience and culture. The degree seeks to accomplish this by: (1) guiding majors successfully through the departmental curriculum, (2) developing in majors an intellectual appreciation for the discipline of religious studies , ultimately fostering a continued pursuit of self-actualization; and (3) instilling in majors an appreciation for African, African-American, and Caribbean contributions to the development of American and world religious history. To accomplish its mission, the degree will provide its majors with support to address all transitional issues faced during their matriculation. The Program in Religious Studies explores religious teachings and practices as important aspects of social, political and economic life. The program focuses on analysis of religious phenomena and does not endorse or promote religious beliefs or the views and practices of any particular religious practice or tradition. Degree Purpose The purpose of the B.A. in Religious Studies is to provide a comprehensive array of curricula, co-curricula, and extra-curricula programs to ensure that majors acquire the requisite tools, skills, and competencies needed to be successful graduate students and/or professionals. It will further equip the majors with the academic credentials and theoretical foundation to enter their respective countries, communities, graduate programs, or careers as effective leaders, equipped to participate in the further development of these societies.
