Our Mission Statement The Department of Chemistry is committed to excellence in its programs. It works to help both its students and faculty discover their talents and abilities to the fullest, instilling critical and creative thinking. The Department specifically is committed to challenging its students to think and act as scientists and responsible citizens, by offering a diverse set of lecture courses and teaching approaches, as well as a significant amount of experience in laboratory work. The Department is also committed to offering its faculty the opportunity to grow as scholars and teachers. By their example and by presenting opportunities for such activity, the faculty of the Department encourage students to participate in scholarly endeavors, especially independent research. We emphasize the values of trust, respect for others, and personal and professional integrity by acting in this way and by expecting our students to do the same. Department of Chemistry Goals and Objectives 1. Students will appreciate chemistry for its intrinsic aesthetic value. Students will be able to describe those chemical principles, processes, or phenomena which they consider to be aesthetically pleasing. Students will be able to explain why chemists would consider a particular principle, process, phenomenon, or compound to be aesthetically pleasing. 2. Students will understand the ways chemists describe and model the behavior and properties of matter. Students will use appropriate theoretical models to explain experimental observations. Students will be able to predict or explain the behavior of a new substance, or of a known substance in a new system, based on the behavior of related compounds and accepted models of structure and of the phenomenon observed. 3. Students will have knowledge of the fundamental principles and contemporary practices of chemistry, and will be able to use them to investigate, explain, and predict new phenomena. Students will be familiar with the principal tools of laboratory research in chemistry . Students will be able to use the chemical literature in the investigation of a problem. Students will be able to assess experimental data critically. Students will be able to describe their results of a chemical investigation clearly and appropriately. They will be able to do so orally and in writing. Students will demonstrate competence in the safe use and handling of chemicals. Students will have participated in at least one independent research project. Students will be aware of the career choices available to chemistry graduates. 4. Students will be aware of the application of scientific principles, particularly those of chemistry , to societal issues. Students will be able to analyze critically regional, national, and international issues in which chemistry or chemical principles are involved. Students will recognize the appropriate contexts of science applied to such issues. 5. The Department faculty will be a community of teacher/scholars. The Department will assure that equipment, teaching assignments, policies, and class size are conducive to effective teaching in chemistry . The Department will make available to its faculty and visiting faculty adequate office and laboratory space to conduct their teaching, research, and office hour assignments. The Department will provide and maintain the modern instrumentation and equipment needed to conduct meaningful, original scholarly work in chemistry. 6. The Chemistry Department will be a scholarly community in which faculty, staff, and students actively participate, in both formal and informal venues. The Department will make available to faculty, staff, and students a variety of educational, scholarly, and social activities outside traditional lecture and laboratory courses. The Department will encourage and support the involvement of faculty, staff, and students in those activities. A significant number of students will participate in the scholarly, educational, and social activities of the Department. The Department will assure that faculty and students have adequate space and time for participation in those activities. The Department will make available to students the modern instrumentation and equipment needed for meaningful participation in those activities. 7. The Department of Chemistry will be an active participant in the scientific community beyond the department. The Department, when appropriate, will collaborate with other departments within the College and University on scholarly and social endeavors. The Department's faculty, staff, and students will participate in the activities of the local section of the American Chemical Society and other scientific societies. The Department will make its facilities available for meetings of the local section of the American Chemical Society and other scientific societies. The Department will maintain an active outreach program to chemical educators and students at the elementary, secondary, and college level. 8. Students will behave in an ethical manner. Students will respect the dignity of other people. Students will recognize the importance of service to others. Students will report data truthfully and completely. They will clearly distinguish between raw data and their interpretation. Students will truthfully present their own work, and give appropriate credit to the work of others. 9. Students will develop a commitment to a life of learning. Students will demonstrate the ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others.
